Turning 3 today. All devious and good-looking. Quite the gene pool, if I say so myself. Certainly destined for greatness. We love you, buddy.

For a short dedication to the birthday boy, head over to Fancy Plans.

It’s that time of year, when gardens begin producing more fruits and vegetables than any household can reasonably be expected to consume. All the hard work has paid off and is now being thrust into the hands of others. (By the way, have you met our income tax system yet?) This eggplant was given to us by my wife’s parents. It arrived accompanied by many vegetables, but it stood out from the pack.
It took over the counter. It demanded respect in a gruff voice. It tried to pick our pockets while slapping Nixon pins on our shirts and intimidating the tomatoes.
It said things about not being a crook and shadowy setups by people on the “list.” It conjectured that bailing out French colonies never worked and that it had tried to meet “those stupid hippies halfway.” I caught it late at night, huddled over the stereo, making conversational mixtapes for someone. It denied things categorically.
It went into a ratatouille attempt, bellowing the whole time.
It was no Jesus tortilla or Virgin Mary sandwich, but it did carry a certain air of wounded superiority and blustering desperation, despite its ridiculous Jughead hat. It was the only vegetable we ever saw sweat.

This is a shot that CLT took that is one of my many favorites and so I picked it for my gravatar.
It does make me feel a little sad though since it looks liked it was well loved and lost along his travel that day. Sometimes I guess no matter how loved and watched over we are we will always get a little lost along the way but hopefully just for a moment before we are found again. (I hope he found his way home)

More than just a great writer. Thanks for inspiring me.
